Welcome letter: Congress of the SBTMO 2018
Every year new challenges arise for bone marrow transplantation. Drugs and treatments that can change the life of thousands of patients worldwide. The SBTMO has dedicated itself for 22 years so professionals acting in the field of BTM are able to receive update on technical and scientific advances.
For three days, the 22nd Congress of the Brazilian Society of Bone Marrow Transplantation will bring to the attendance the world leading exponents of hematology, hemotherapy, cell therapy and related areas, besides showing what is debated around the world.
In 2017, more than a thousand attendees followed our special guest Stefan Octavian Ciurea, associated professor at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, who approached the future of haploidentical stem cell transplantation and is coming back this year with updates.
In 2018, the expectation is to hold an event even better, with great names of BMT, such as Dr. BRONWEN SHAW, representing the CIBMTR – International Register, who will cover topics like donors’ safety and Dr. JULIET BARKER from the Memorial Sloan Katherine Cancer Center sharing the present and future perspectives of the use of umbilical cord blood (UCB) units. Among other foreigner and Brazilian speakers, they will contribute to the constant development of BMT in Brazil.
It is a new reality in this field, because having so many source alternatives of hematopoietic stem cells, almost all patients will have the opportunity to undergo BMT. A reality quite different from the past, when we did not have effective voluntary donor registers, PUCB banks with large inventories, identical related and partially related donors, besides the new combinations of medications and procedures to prevent and control major complications. Between August 2 and 4, the Wonderful City waits for you to strengthen even further the technical and scientific knowledge of bone marrow transplantation in the country.
Everything to look for the best diagnoses and treatments available to Brazilian patients. Let us celebrate, with such a great event, the 25 years from the creation of the REDOME (Brazilian Register of Bone Marrow Voluntary Donors), an acknowledged patrimony for all of us and let us also discuss about the important aspects of histocompatibility, in partnership with the ABH (Brazilian Association of Histocompatibility).
The SBTMO counts on your presence in Rio de Janeiro to strengthen even further our conference. We will meet you there!
